The Royal Textile Academy of Bhutan (RTA) conducted the first ever ‘Product Development and Design Training Workshop’ from 4 March – 31 July 2019 for local textile and fashion designers. The training was facilitated by Dr. Joseph Loo, as part of the collaboration between Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, USA and the RTA.
The objectives of the workshop were to build the capacity of the local Designers to set a new standard for textile-based products in the market.
During the four months, the participants learnt about understanding products and customers, culture-led designs, design ethics, signature designs, design tools and principles, colors, and developing collection. The training included comprehensive theoretical and practical sessions. During the course of the training, the Designers developed their own collection that reflects Bhutanese cultural references embedded with contemporary designs. Each collection was judged, and a winner was declared.
On 18th September 2019, at the closing of the program, the products of the designers will be launched by the Royal Patron, Her Majesty Gyalyum Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck at the RTA. The winner and participants will be awarded certificates by Her Majesty.
The winner of the competition will sign a contract with the RTA to produce the collection exclusively for the museum shop at the RTA. Furthermore, the winning collection will be submitted to the World Crafts Council 2020 Award of Excellence program next year.
The Royal Textile Academy (RTA) is a registered Civil Society Organization established in May 2001 under the patronage of Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck. The RTA is dedicated to promote and preserve the unique textile arts of Bhutan.
