Top Indian Designers take part in Bhutanese textile exhibition

On 5 June the grand opening ceremony of the Royal textile academy will take place in Thimphu. Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, chairperson of the Academy will grace the occasion as the chief guest.

The launching of the Exhibition catalogue book will take place today, followed by opening of school, conservation center, Textile Museum and the Exhibits by Her Majesty. The main Mission is dedicated to preserve and promote the Bhutanese Textile in particular and to promote the unique culture and traditions of Bhutan by creating international awareness and encouraging international collaboration to promote mutually beneficial exhibits and educational programs.

Rinzin Dorji, the executive director said it’s a huge achievement to come this far. The event is also held to encourage the weavers and designers of Bhutan and provide a small platform for young aspiring models.

“It’s Her Majesty’s passion for textile art, that we have come this far,” said Rinzin Dorji.

On 6 June, the celebration will continue with a grand fashion show where famous Indian Designers like Ritu Kumar and Rajesh Pratap Singh from India will showcase their works   at the textile museum.

Ritu Kumar and Rajesh Pratap Singh are both working on Bhutanese textile as well as their own designs. Rajesh is working with Bhutanese “Buray” to create his own designs.

Popular models from India like Carol Gracias and Nayanika Chatterji will be walking the ramp on 6 April, along with Bhutanese Models, show casing works of all the designers.
